The stadium hosted Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, The venue is located on about 62 acres 0. For Allegiant Stadium, Raiders owner Mark Davis retained the same architecture firm, MANICA Architecture , that had designed the previously proposed Carson Stadium near Los Angeles.

Allegiant Stadium is a ten-level domed stadium featuring an ETFE roof, silver and black exterior with light-up strips installed by YESCO , a foot 84 m media mesh video screen facing Interstate 15, and large retractable curtain-like side windows facing the Las Vegas Strip.

The stadium has a roll-in natural Bermuda grass field similar to the one at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona , which is primarily used for NFL games. Unlike the Arizona facility which does not have a varsity tenant Allegiant Stadium also has an artificial turf field, which is primarily used for college football games.

This design was chosen because UNLV prefers to play on an artificial turf surface, and also due to concerns that use of the grass field by two teams would cause excessive wear to the playing surface.

The artificial turf is placed directly on the stadium's concrete floor, and is rolled up and stored under the stadium when the tray is rolled in. There are 2, parking spots surrounding the stadium and 6, in proximity to it.

More than 35, parking spaces are located within a mile of Allegiant Stadium. In January , reports emerged that Las Vegas Sands was considering developing a stadium in conjunction with Majestic Realty and UNLV, on a acre 17 ha site on Tropicana Avenue owned by UNLV.

Raiders owner Mark Davis visited Las Vegas on January 29, , to tour the site and meet with Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson and other local figures. In order for the team to relocate to Las Vegas, a new stadium was required, since Sam Boyd Stadium was undersized for the NFL and there were no other professional-caliber stadiums in Nevada.

The Raiders had previously played a preseason game in Las Vegas at Cashman Field against the Houston Oilers during the American Football League AFL preseason and owner Al Davis considered relocating the team there. On March 21, , when asked about Las Vegas, Davis said, "I think the Raiders like the Las Vegas plan," and "it's a very very very intriguing and exciting plan.

On April 1, , Davis met with UNLV officials and toured Sam Boyd Stadium to evaluate whether it could serve as a temporary home for the team. In the spring of , the board of directors of Las Vegas Sands rejected Adelson's stadium proposal. The viability of the Tropicana Avenue site was called into serious question in June , when Southwest Airlines objected to the location because its proximity to the northern end of one of Harry Reid International Airport 's runways could negatively affect the safety and capacity of air traffic at the airport.

On August 25, , the Raiders filed a trademark application for "Las Vegas Raiders" on the same day renderings of a proposed stadium design were released. Majestic Realty revealed in October that it had withdrawn from the stadium project.

In October , Sandoval called a special session of the Nevada Legislature to consider the stadium and other tourism-related proposals. The Raiders filed relocation papers on January 19 to move from Oakland to Las Vegas.

It was reported that the Raiders had selected the Russell Road site as the stadium location, the team would pay one dollar in rent, and that they could control the naming rights for both the stadium and plaza and in addition keep signage sponsorship revenue.

NFL owners voted to approve the move by a margin of 31—1 on March The Raiders closed the purchase of the land for the stadium at the Russell Road site on May 1. Mortenson previously worked on U. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium authority approved a stadium lease with the Raiders on May On September 18, , construction activity began on the stadium site with site preparation.

The event was hosted by George Lopez and included other celebrities including Carlos Santana , longtime Vegas icon Wayne Newton , and Howie Dorough and Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys.

It also featured a tribute to the victims of the nearby Las Vegas shooting , including a performance by Judith Hill and the Las Vegas House of Blues Gospel Choir performing 'Rise up' and the lighting of 58 beams of light, symbolizing the 58 victims who were killed in the attack.

In January, construction crews began blasting caliche rock with dynamite to excavate and create the stadium bowl. During construction in December , a construction worker "buried a Kansas City Chiefs flag near what [was] expected to be the yard line of the new Raiders stadium".

On August 27, Clark County gave the stadium a new address, rechristening it from its original Dean Martin Drive address to Al Davis Way. On May 24, , it was announced that 20 additional suites would be added to the stadium in the south end zone, with six suites on the main concourse and 14 suites in the lower suite level, one section above the main concourse.

The suites were added in an effort to make the stadium more attractive for a Super Bowl. On January 27, , the Raiders announced additional suites would be added on the level sidelines in advance of the season and in preparation for hosting Super Bowl LVIII in Clark County officials declared that the stadium met its substantial completion date on July 31, , meaning it could issue a certificate of occupancy and officially begin leasing the venue to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Work would still continue, with the project closeout scheduled for October The opening of the stadium was complicated by the COVID pandemic in Nevada. The original opening event at the stadium was scheduled to be a Garth Brooks concert but the event was postponed to due to the pandemic.

The Raiders did not admit spectators at any of their games during the season "based on our commitment to protect the health of our fans and the entire community". Davis publicly stated that he did not want to inhibit the ability for any of the Raiders' season ticketholders to attend games, and vowed to not attend any game at Allegiant Stadium until spectators are able to attend.

The first event at the stadium was a Monday Night Football game on September 21, , where the Raiders defeated the New Orleans Saints 34— The first Raiders touchdown was a second-quarter three-yard touchdown reception by fullback Alec Ingold , one of three touchdown passes on the night for quarterback Derek Carr.

The first UNLV Rebels game at the stadium was on October 31, , a Rebels loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack 37—19 in the Battle for Nevada. The game was the first event in the stadium to have fans in attendance. The Raiders played their first game at the stadium with fans in attendance on September 13, , as they defeated the Baltimore Ravens 33—27 in overtime on Monday Night Football.

Local government does not receive any rent or revenue sharing from the stadium, because such an arrangement would not be compatible with the tax-exempt status of the bonds that were issued for stadium construction.

The stadium serves as the home of the Las Vegas Raiders and replaced Sam Boyd Stadium as home of UNLV Rebels football. On July 24, , the Pac Conference announced that the and Pac Football Championship Game would be played at Allegiant Stadium, moving from Levi's Stadium.

Allegiant Stadium is the host of the Las Vegas Bowl , which moved from Sam Boyd Stadium. The game features a team from the Pac against a team from the SEC or Big Ten , alternating annually. In March , a new neutral site college football game dubbed the Vegas Kickoff Classic was announced.

In September , it was announced that Allegiant Stadium was to host a college football game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the BYU Cougars on October 8, , as part of Notre Dame's Shamrock Series , with the Fighting Irish as the home team.

On July 25, , Davis returned as part owner of the team. As part of the deal, Davis was also given control over football operations.

In , with Wayne Valley out of the country for several weeks attending the Olympic Games in Munich, Davis's attorneys drafted a revised partnership agreement that made him the new managing general partner, with complete control over all of the Raiders' operations.

McGah, a supporter of Davis, signed the agreement. Under partnership law, by a 2—1 vote of the general partners, the new agreement was thus ratified.

Valley was furious when he discovered this, and immediately filed suit to have the new agreement overturned, but the court sided with Davis and McGah. In Valley sold his interest in the team. Although Davis only owned 25 percent of the team, no other partners have had any voice in team operations since.

Legally, the club is owned by a nine-member limited partnership. Football, Inc. The heirs of the original eight-member ownership group are limited partners. From onward, Davis had exercised total control of the Raiders as president of A.

The limited partners have almost no role in team operations, though they were briefly mentioned in team media guides. Many of them had not watched, let alone attended, Raiders games in years at the time of Davis' death. Ed McGah, the last surviving member of the original ownership group, died in September Upon his death, his interest was devised to a family trust , of which his son, E.

McGah , was the trustee. The younger McGah was himself a part-owner of the team, as a limited partner, and died in Several members of the McGah family filed suit against Davis in October , alleging mismanagement of the team by Davis. The lawsuit sought monetary damages and to remove Davis and A.

as general partner. Among their specific complaints, the McGahs alleged that Davis failed to provide them with detailed financial information previously provided to Ed and E.

The Raiders countered that—under the terms of the partnership agreement as amended in —upon the death of the elder McGah in , his general partner interest converted to that of a limited partner. The team continued to provide the financial information to the younger McGah as a courtesy, though it was under no obligation to do so.

The majority of the lawsuit was dismissed in April , when an Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled that the case lacked merit since none of the other partners took part in the lawsuit.

In October the lawsuit was settled out of court. He was unsuccessful in this effort, reportedly because the sale would not give the purchaser any control of the Raiders, even in the event of Davis's death. Al Davis died on October 8, , at age According to a partnership agreement, Davis' interest passed to his wife, Carol.

Unlike his father, Mark mostly leaves on-field matters to the football operations staff. According to a report released by Forbes Magazine , the Raiders' overall team value is US 2.

Although the team has regularly sold out since , the team ranked in the bottom three in league attendance from to , and failed to sell out a majority of their home games.

One of the reasons cited for the poor attendance figures was the decision to issue costly personal seat licenses PSLs upon the Raiders' return to Oakland in They were only valid for ten years, while other teams issue them permanently.

As a result, fewer than 31, PSLs were sold for a stadium that holds twice that number. From until the lifting of the policy in television blackouts of Raiders home games were common.

In November the team announced that it was taking over ticket sales from the privately run Oakland Football Marketing Association OFMA , and abolishing PSLs. The Raiders and Al Davis have been involved in several lawsuits throughout their history, including ones against the NFL.

When the NFL declined to approve the Raiders' move from Oakland to Los Angeles in , the team joined the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission in a lawsuit against the league alleging a violation of antitrust laws.

He was the only NFL owner to do so. After relocating back to Oakland, the team sued the NFL for interfering with their negotiations to build a new stadium at Hollywood Park prior to the move.

The Raiders' lawsuit further contended that they had the rights to the Los Angeles market, and thus were entitled to compensation from the league for giving up those rights by moving to Oakland. A jury found in favor of the NFL in , but the verdict was overturned a year later due to alleged juror misconduct.

In February , a California Court of Appeal unanimously upheld the original verdict. When the Raiders moved back from Los Angeles in , the city of Oakland and the Oakland—Alameda County Coliseum Authority agreed to sell Personal Seat Licenses PSLs to help pay for the renovations to their stadium.

But after games rarely sold out, the Raiders filed suit, claiming that they were misled by the city and the Coliseum Authority with the false promise that there would be sellouts.

On November 2, , a settlement was announced, part of which was the abolishment of PSLs as of the season. In the team sued the NFL in Santa Clara County , in a lawsuit that ultimately included 22 separate causes of action.

Included in the team's claims were claims that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ' pirate logo diluted the team's California trademark in its own pirate logo and for trade dress dilution on the ground that the League had improperly permitted other teams including the Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers to adopt colors for their uniforms similar to those of the Raiders.

Among other things, the lawsuit sought an injunction to prevent the Buccaneers and Panthers from wearing their uniforms while playing in California. In these claims were dismissed on summary judgment because the relief sought would violate the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution.

In a number of current and former Oakland players such as Bill Romanowski , Tyrone Wheatley , Barrett Robbins , Chris Cooper and Dana Stubblefield were named as clients of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative BALCO.

BALCO was an American company led by founder and owner Victor Conte. Also in , journalists Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada investigated the company's role in a drug sports scandal later referred to as the BALCO Affair. BALCO marketed tetrahydrogestrinone "the Clear" , a then-undetected, performance-enhancing steroid developed by chemist Patrick Arnold.

Conte, BALCO vice president James Valente, weight trainer Greg Anderson and coach Remi Korchemny had supplied a number of high-profile sports stars from the United States and Europe with the Clear and human growth hormone for several years.

Headquartered in Burlingame , BALCO was founded in Officially, BALCO was a service business for blood and urine analysis and food supplements. In , Victor Conte offered free blood and urine tests to a group of athletes known as the BALCO Olympians.

He then was allowed to attend the Summer Olympics in Seoul , South Korea. From Conte worked with well-known American football star Bill Romanowski, who proved to be useful to establish new connections to athletes and coaches.
